Propane Fireplaces in Public Spaces Prohibition Lifted, Campfire Ban Remains

Effective at noon on Friday, September 10, 2021, the prohibition on propane fireplaces and cooking in public places will be lifted.

This prohibition was established in the Enderby & District Fire Department’s fire suppression area on August 6, 2021 in response to extreme wildfire hazards, and was over and above the Kamloops Fire Centre’s regional prohibitions due to local conditions. As of September 9, 2021, the Kamloops Fire Centre has downgraded the risk rating in the area to “Low to Moderate.”

Please note that the campfire ban implemented on June 30, 2021 remains in effect. The following remain banned:

  • campfires;
  • open burning (all);
  • fireworks;
  • sky lanterns;
  • burn barrels or burn cages;
  • binary exploding targets;
  • tiki and similar kinds of torches;
  • chimineas;
  • air curtain burners; and
  • outdoor stoves or other portable campfire apparatus without a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or Underwriter Laboratories of Canada (ULC) rating.

The campfire prohibition will remain in effect until the Kamloops Fire Centre rescinds its notice, unless notice is provided otherwise.

Fire Chief Vetter praised local residents: “Thank you for your efforts to stay safe and exercise caution during this wildfire season by observing the fire bans, as well as helping out your neighbours, family, friends, evacuees and emergency responders. Your good work in service to others is appreciated.”
