Enderby Fire Ban on Category 2 Open Burning in Effect as of July 15, 2022

The Kamloops Fire Centre has determined that a ban on Category 2 open burning and other equipment and activities will be effective at 12 noon on July 15, 2022.

Within the City of Enderby and Shuswap River Fire Protection Districts, the same prohibition will apply. The prohibition is being enacted to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.

Category 2 open burning involves fires less than 2 metres in height and less than 3 square metres in width. Category 3 open burning (fires greater than 2 metres in height and greater than 3 square metres in width) is already prohibited.

In addition to the Category 2 and 3 open burning prohibition, the following activities and equipment are also prohibited:

• Fireworks;
• Sky Lanterns; and,
• Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description.

While campfires are not prohibited at this time, the City of Enderby does have specific regulations that only allow them under certain conditions, inside City limits, regardless of any other prohibition.

The BC Wildfire Service urges people to take the following precautions with any allowed outdoor burning:

  • Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control the fire and stop it escaping.
  • Do not burn in windy conditions. The weather can change quickly, and wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires.
  • Create a fire guard around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material right down to the soil.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Make sure that your fire is fully extinguished, and the ashes are cold to the touch before you leave the area for any length of time.
  • Always be compliant with local bylaws and regulations.
