July 20th-26th, 2025 Declared National Drowning Prevention Week in Enderby

Council for City of Enderby has declared July 20th-26th, 2025 as National Drowning Prevention Week in Enderby.

National Drowning Prevention Week is a public education initiative by the Lifesaving Society with events taking place across the country to focus attention on drowning prevention. This year’s theme is Safer Together!

Every day of National Drowning Prevention Week, a variety of lifesaving activities will be hosted by Enderby & District Recreation Services.

Itinerary

Monday July 21st – Swim to Survive Challenge during Public Swims (1:30-3:30pm and 6:30-8:00pm) All participants receive a certificate and sticker or tattoo and their name entered in a draw for a free family swim pass.

Tuesday July 22nd – Ladder Approach Rescue Demo and Practice during Public Swim (1:30-3:30pm)

Wednesday July 23rd – Life Jacket Fitting and demo of all things required for floating on the River at Visitor Center & at Enderby Pool (1:30-3:30pm)

Thursday July 24th  – Swim to Survive Challenge and Stroke Correction for Adults (during Lap swim from 8:15-9:30am)

Thursday July 24th – Open Water Rescue Demo and practice at Tuey Park (Waterwheel Beach) by River Ambassadors – (1:30-3:30pm)

Friday July 25th“National Drowning Prevention Day” 

  • Adult Free Stroke Correction and Self Rescue practice during lap swim (9:30-11:00am)
  • Free Parent & Tot (under 2 years) entry for Public Swim (1:30-3:30pm) *Supervision of Children Demo at 2pm
  • Life jacket Fitting and relays during Public Swim (1:30-3:30pm)
  • Round them up Reach & Throw contest during Youth Night Swim (6:30-8:00pm)

Saturday July 26th – Swim to Survive Challenge during Public Swim (1:30-3:30pm) 

Did you know that…

  • The Enderby Pool was originally built to help prevent drowning?
  • The City of Enderby is a proud supporter of the Shuswap River Ambassador Program, which provides safety information to river users?
  • In partnership with the Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue and Enderby & District Recreation Services, the City has installed two “Kids Don’t Float” kiosks where lifejackets are available for youth to borrow for free – one at the Belvedere Park hand launch and the other at Tuey Park?

PROCLAMATION
 
“National Drowning Prevention Week”
 
WHEREAS, most drownings are preventable, and education and a healthy respect for the potential danger that any body of water may present can give our community an opportunity to safely enjoy the beauty and recreation opportunities offered by these bodies of water; and
 
WHEREAS, residents of Enderby are urged to supervise children who are in and around the water, to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages while participating in aquatic activities, and to always wear a lifejacket when boating; and
 
WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly passed the UN Resolution on Drowning Prevention (A/75/L.76) and named July 25th of each year as World Drowning Prevention Day; and
 
WHEREAS, Lifesaving Society Canada has declared July 20th-26th, 2025 National Drowning Prevention Week to focus on the drowning problem and the hundreds of lives that could be saved this year.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, Council for the City of Enderby, HEREBY DECLARES, July 20th – 26th, 2025 as:
 
“National Drowning Prevention Week”
