Enderby City Council, Community Futures North Okanagan and the Enderby & District Chamber of Commerce will once again celebrate Small Business Week by hosting a local Business Walk.

The Business Walk will take place during Small Business Week on Thursday, October 23, 2025 from 10am to 12pm.

“The Business Walk is one of the most valuable ways for us to connect with the people who drive our local economy – our business community,” says Mayor Huck Galbraith. “These conversations take us to the front line so that we can learn about the successes, opportunities, and barriers of local businesses, and work to connect them to supports and solutions.”

Business Walks provide elected officials and business support organizations with a dedicated opportunity to listen to the business community.

Business owners will be asked a set of questions which will give information about the local economy, how it is changing, and opportunities to grow.

“The Business Walk allows us to listen and collaborate with Enderby’s enthusiastic entrepreneurs in real time,” shares Hal Mueller, Business Advisor with Community Futures North Okanagan. “When local businesses succeed, the entire community grows stronger. That’s what we’re here to help make happen.”

“These conversations give us valuable insight that helps the Chamber advocate more effectively and provide meaningful support,” explains Jody Fowler, President of Enderby & District Chamber of Commerce. “Our small businesses are the backbone of Enderby, and by working together, we can help them continue to grow and succeed."

The contractor will be sending in a whole fleet of sweepers to crush the debris, so they will be all over town - be sure to give them a friendly wave and welcome them!

Please sweep your sidewalks to the curb (try to avoid making piles of material - it is easier to pick up by a mechanical sweeper if it is more evenly distributed) and avoid parking on the street until after the sweeper passes - this will help our contractor to clear as much debris as possible and avoid missing spots due to obstructions.

As sweeping is happening on the same day as the spring pruning pick-up, if you haven't set out your pruning bundles yet and could set them just behind the curb or in an unpaved boulevard, that would be much appreciated. It is not required if you have already placed the materials, but it will help our sweeping contractor to move through the area as effectively as possible.

As the Province studies how to introduce safe, fair "made in BC" regulations for ride-sharing services, Enderby City Council is asking Transportation Minister Claire Trevena to ensure that those regulations are a good fit in small communities.

In small communities, public transportation options are often limited. This makes it difficult for seniors to get to medical appointments or for people to return home after socializing. Small communities have different needs and ridership demands, in part because of the lack of other transportation options.

While the Province is understandably trying to find a balanced regulation that will protect established public transportation options in large markets, Enderby City Council is concerned that these regulations must be flexible to work in small communities; otherwise, the regulations may be an insurmountable barrier to growing this innovative transportation solution in smaller markets.

Enderby City Council submitted a resolution to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM), which was endorsed at the 2017 convention.

The resolution, titled "Regulation of Ride-sharing Services in Small, Rural, & Remote Communities", states:
[su_quote]
Whereas the Province of BC has expressed its intent to create a regulatory framework that permits ridesharing services and transportation network companies to operate in BC;

And whereas the assessment of the possible impacts of allowing new entrants into the passenger transportation field has focused primarily on large urban communities with robust, established, passenger transportation options, which is often not the reality for small, rural, and remote communities where ridesharing and transportation networking offers uniquely viable solutions in the absence of other options:

Therefore be it resolved that UBCM ask the Province of BC to implement a viable, flexible, ride-sharing service regulation in BC with attention given to regulatory solutions that will help solve those passenger transportation challenges that are unique to small, rural, and remote communities.
[/su_quote]

The resolution was previously endorsed by the Southern Interior Local Government Association.

More recently, the Enderby City Council sent a letter to MLA Greg Kyllo, asking that he encourage his party to cooperate with the BC Green Party in expediting a regulatory solution that will support ride-sharing services in small communities like Enderby.

This applies within the City of Enderby and the Shuswap River Fire Protection District.

"Following recent precipitation and cooler temperatures, the hazard has been reduced such that we can lift the campfire ban," said Enderby & District Fire Chief Cliff Vetter. "Despite this, the area is still dry and the public is asked to be extremely cautious if they choose to have a campfire. All campfires should be conducted in accordance with relevant bylaws and regulations."

If you choose to have a campfire, please ensure that a responsible person is in charge at all times, it is fully extinguished before you leave the area, adequate water and a hand tool is kept nearby for fire suppression, and a fuel break is created around the perimeter of the campfire that is free of combustibles.

In addition, within the City of Enderby there are specific regulations on outdoor fireplaces that must be followed under its Good Neighbour Bylaw. An outdoor fireplace must be a secured, CSA approved container using seasoned wood, charcoal briquettes, propane or natural gas, and used only for providing light or heat or cooking food. These regulations only apply within City limits, and do not apply to the Shuswap River Fire Protection District.

The prohibition on open burning continues to apply.

Update: Temporary irrigation restriction has ended.

Due to a pump failure at one of its water sources, the City of Enderby is requiring its water customers to avoid irrigating on the evening of August 24 and the morning of August 25.

The irrigation restriction applies to all properties, including those which are allowed to irrigate during this time under the normal watering restrictions. Hand watering of gardens, plants, and flowers is permitted during this time, as will other normal domestic, business and institutional uses.

The peak hourly demand on the City’s water system occurs from 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm when irrigation is permitted. Due to the pump failure, the City is down to a single source which is not sufficient to keep up with peak hourly demand at this time of year. It is anticipated that the pump will be repaired by the afternoon of August 25. By restricting irrigation, the water production rate should be sufficient to keep up with the demand rate, and will ensure that there is water for essential needs and fire flows.

The City will provide additional notice if the restriction needs to be extended further. There are no anticipated changes in the quality of water as a result of the repair works.

The City thanks residents and businesses for their cooperation.

This applies to customers on BOTH sides of the Bridge, and includes Splatsin and the Gunter-Ellison Service Extension.

The bacteria results all came back negative (which is good - this means no bacterial presence detected in the system) and, following consultation with the Interior Health Authority, the City has been permitted to lift the Boil Water Advisory. The City thanks the public for their patience during this period.

The Mandatory Water Conservation Advisory and State of Local Emergency were previously cancelled on May 5, 2017.
