The City of Enderby is extending the precautionary Water Quality Advisory issued on March 2, 2026. While emergency repairs to the Water Treatment Plant are complete, the advisory remains in place as the City works to transition the system back to normal operations safely.

Current Status

The Water Treatment Plant repairs were completed successfully and the clearwell has been disinfected and refilled. However, the refilling process caused an increase in turbidity (cloudiness) to the clearwell water. As turbidity interferes with treatment processes, it must be reduced to assure that only safe drinking water enters the system. In addition to allowing time for the turbidity to settle, the City is taking manual actions to accelerate the process so that the water meets this standard as soon as possible.

Next Steps and Timeline

The City is following a strict safety protocol to return the system to full service:

Settling and Testing: Once the turbidity reaches acceptable levels (expected within the next 1 to 3 days), bacteriological sampling will be conducted to verify that the water in the clearwell meets Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Returning to Normal Operations: Following verification that the clearwell water meets Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines, the Water Treatment Plant will be brought back online and start serving water into the system.

System Turnover: After the Water Treatment Plant is back in service, the existing water in the system must fully turn over, before the Water Quality Advisory is lifted, which will take several days.

Lifting the Advisory

A firm date for the removal of the advisory will be issued once the plant is online and the water turnover rate is confirmed. It is anticipated that the date for the removal of the advisory will be between March 11 and 13, 2026.

Next Update

A further update will be provided on Monday, March 9, 2026.

Precautionary Instructions

Until the advisory is officially lifted, users with weakened immune systems or those seeking additional protection should continue to:

Boil water rapidly for at least 1 minute for drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, or food preparation.

The City of Enderby Drinking Water System has issued a precautionary Water Quality Advisory starting on Monday, March 2, 2026 at 12:00pm due to emergency repairs to the Water Treatment Plant.

While the repairs are proceeding, the City of Enderby will be reliant upon its back-up groundwater source, which only receives one form of disinfection (chlorination, without ultraviolet treatment). The Water Quality Advisory is expected to remain in effect for 3 to 5 days, until the repair has been completed and the Water Treatment Plant has been returned to potable status. A notification will be issued when the Water Quality Advisory is lifted.

Until notified otherwise, users with weakened immune systems or wishing additional protection should take the following precautions when drinking, washing fruit and vegetables, making beverages or ice, or when brushing teeth:

Consistent with the Kamloops Fire Centre, the prohibition on campfires is lifted effective at noon on September 29, 2025.

Lifting the campfire ban comes with a need for continued caution. "The campfire ban is being lifted due to a reduction to the fire hazard level associated with forthcoming precipitation and seasonal temperature changes," said Enderby & District Fire Department Chief Bastiaansen. "However, I urge continued vigilance by the public. Never leave a campfire unattended and always follow safety guidelines and local regulations to reduce the risk."

This applies to the City of Enderby and the Shuswap River Fire Protection District; unprotected areas of Area F of the Regional District of North Okanagan are subject to the Kamloops Fire Centre’s regulation.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited.

In addition to open fires being prohibited, the following activities and equipment remain banned:

Fireworks

Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description (except when used for a Category 1 campfire as defined by the Wildfire Regulation)

Within the City of Enderby, there are additional regulations on campfires and similar activities that must be followed.
A power outage during the afternoon of October 20, 2024 has impacted ultraviolet treatment at the City of Enderby Water Treatment Plant. As technicians work to repair this issue, drinking water will only receive filtration and chlorine disinfection, but not the second ultraviolet disinfection barrier.

The prohibition on Category 3 Open Burning within the City of Enderby and Shuswap River Fire Protection District will be lifted effective at noon on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Category 3 open fires remain prohibited.

The prohibition on campfires, chimneas, and tiki torches was previously lifted effective August 28, 2024.

“Please ensure that a responsible person is in charge of a campfire at all times, that it is fully extinguished before leaving the area, that adequate water and a hand tool is kept nearby for fire suppression, and that a fuel break is created around the perimeter of the campfire that is free of combustibles,” advised Fire Chief Vetter.

This is consistent with the approach of the Kamloops Fire Centre, which regulates those areas not protected by a fire department.

Within the City of Enderby, there are additional regulations on campfires and open burning that must be followed. Please visit the City’s Open Burning and Campfire Regulations page for further information.

Consistent with the Kamloops Fire Centre, the prohibition on campfires is lifted effective at noon on August 28, 2024

This applies to the City of Enderby and the Shuswap River Fire Protection District; unprotected areas of Area F of the Regional District of North Okanagan are subject to the Kamloops Fire Centre’s regulation.

“I would like to thank our residents and visitors for following the ban on campfires and open burning this season. With decreased temperatures and higher relative humidity, it is now suitable to lift the ban on campfires.” said Enderby & District Fire Chief Cliff Vetter. “Even though the ban has lifted, the public must continue to follow some simple safety precautions to prevent an accidental spread of fire.”

Chimneas and tiki torches are also now permitted.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited until noon on October 11, 2024, or until the order is rescinded.

In addition to open fires being prohibited, the following activities and equipment remain banned:
