“I moved here with my family in 1966 and there is no doubt in my mind that we accomplished a lot in Enderby.”

Those were Peter Gilowski’s opening remarks, as he accepted his Lifetime Civic Merit Award from City of Enderby Mayor and Council on Friday, June 19.

Mayor Huck Galbraith, flanked by Councillors Tundra Baird, Sarah Yerhoff, Shawn Shishido and David Ramey, proudly recognized Peter Gilowski for “his dedication to community service and the betterment of Enderby.”

Gilowski did a wonderful jig out of his scooter and up to the podium to the delight of the dozens in attendance.

Among his many, many contributions to Enderby, Gilowski has been a member of the Enderby & District Lions Club since 1968.

He says over his 58 years with the organization he has held nearly every executive role and it was he and another Lifetime Civic Merit Award recipient, John Pavelich, who brought the months-long, annual Lions Garage Sale to life.

Therefore, the setting for his award ceremony was perfect. Gilowski accepted his certificate, plaque and artwork outside the Enderby Curling Club, where the Lions Club hosts its Garage Sale.

Throughout the ceremony, the parking lot was abuzz with people coming and going from the Garage Sale as they searched for newfound treasures.

“I am so proud of Enderby [for] supporting the Lions Club,” Gilowski said. “Truly, truly without the Lions Club this town wouldn’t be where it is now.”

The Garage Sale injects hundreds of thousands of dollars into Enderby & District projects, not-for-profits and community events. Gilowski expressed great pleasure in the donation the Lions contributed to the new Enderby Outdoor Pool with funds collected at the Garage Sale.

From the podium, he went on to share, “I was very proud to get the high school to Enderby, I worked hard,” Gilowski beamed. “I worked hard for the seniors complex, which is a very successful building and the seniors love it. And I was always in business. I have many, many businesses.”

Enderby is fortunate for his combination of business acumen and love of community. Gilowski played a substantial role in the construction of the beloved Lions Gazebo at Riverside Park, and as the owner of Ready-Mix Ltd. he donated concrete to the project.

He is most proud of bringing A.L. Fortune Secondary to Enderby. Gilowski shared that he personally called the Ministry of Education and requested a meeting about getting a high school in Enderby.

He explained that the Ministry said they would build a school here, “but that there was no land in Enderby.” On the spot, he offered to sell his own land at cost and “just like that, we were getting a high school in Enderby.”

Enderby is thrilled to announce that the highly anticipated new outdoor pool officially welcomed its first swimmers on June 18, 2026, for a soft opening. A grand opening celebration date will be announced in the near future.

The new pool facility is already receiving rave feedback from early visitors. From the leisure pool with its lazy river to the beach entry area - which is proving perfect for parents and tots - the pool offers something for everyone. In addition to these highlights, the new outdoor pool features dedicated lap lanes and a modern change building.

Enderby's new outdoor pool was developed as a joint project between the City of Enderby and Electoral Area F of the Regional District of North Okanagan, with funding support from both the federal and provincial governments.

The project also benefited from incredible local contributions. The Enderby & District Lions Club donated towards the upcoming spray features, and the Enderby Legion Branch No. 98 provided a donation dedicated to the pool's accessibility features.

During the soft opening of the outdoor pool, the public is asked for extra patience as staff learn the operational nuances of the new amenities while providing service to what is expected to be record-breaking numbers of patrons.

"Our staff and lifeguards are eager to welcome everyone back to the water and into this incredible new space," said Sheryl Hay with Enderby & District Recreation Services. "We appreciate the community's support as our team gets to know the unique dynamics of this facility and works hard to deliver safe, high-quality public swimming and recreation programs for all ages."

Furthermore, some facility components are still in the final stages of commissioning. This includes the waterslide, two spray features, bubbler bench, and hot tub. These amenities will be opened over the next several weeks.  As well, construction work will be ongoing to finish the pool building, so certain sections may be cordoned off to protect the public while work is occurring, and some temporary construction solutions may be visible.

"We are thrilled to dive in and share this new facility with our community," says Mayor Huck Galbraith.  "This pool will be a vibrant gathering place where families will build memories for generations to come. It shows what we can achieve through regional cooperation, senior government investment, and the generosity of our local service clubs like the Lions and the Legion."

Allysa Hopkins, Chair of the Enderby & District Services Commission and Director of Area F (Rural Enderby), added, "This new outdoor pool is a spectacular win for our entire region.  Seeing the pool come to life just in time for the heat of the summer makes it all the more special.  From young families to aquafitting adults and seniors, the new pool will create a special experience that includes everybody."

While we had hoped to host a soft open of the new Enderby Outdoor Pool in Barnes Park on Friday, June 12, it has been delayed as the last bit of essential work is completed on the pool and building.

Once we have our final approvals and inspections, we will be able to announce our soft opening date. We hope to make that announcement very soon.

The City of Enderby has been selected as one of just 40 recipients across Canada to receive funding through the RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program, a national initiative led by the Rick Hansen Foundation in partnership with RBC and the RBC Foundation.

The "Enderby's Barrier-Free Facilities" project will receive $40,000 to support immediate accessibility improvements, reducing physical barriers and creating more inclusive public spaces for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.

The project includes the installation of automatic door openers at the John Pritchard Memorial Sports Complex, improving access to both the arena and curling rink.

These upgrades will make it easier for individuals using mobility devices to participate in recreation and community activities.

At Enderby City Hall, an automatic door opener will be added at the lower entrance, providing seamless access to the building's wheelchair-accessible elevator and ensuring equitable access to municipal services, public meetings, and community engagement opportunities.

The project will also fund a barrier-free hot tub lift at the Enderby Outdoor Pool, scheduled to open in mid-June.

The lift, coupled with an accessible ramp into the pool itself and barrier-free change rooms and washrooms, will allow individuals with mobility challenges to safely access therapeutic and recreational water amenities, supporting health, wellness, and inclusion.

Together, these improvements represent a coordinated approach to accessibility that spans recreation, civic services, and wellness infrastructure.

By enhancing multiple local government facilities, the project will create lasting improvements that increase independence, remove barriers, and ensure public spaces are welcoming and accessible for everyone.

“A strong community is one where everyone can participate and feel welcome,” said Mayor Huck Galbraith.

“Whether someone is visiting City Hall, attending a hockey game, going curling, or enjoying our outdoor pool, they should be able to do so with dignity and independence.”

Allysa Hopkins, Chair of the Enderby & District Services Commission and Director of Area F (Rural Enderby), added, “This is an incredible win for our region. By removing these physical barriers, we are creating more opportunities for residents to stay active, connected, and independent. It’s about ensuring that everyone can fully experience and enjoy all that our community has to offer.”

“We recognize the positive impact accessible infrastructure has on community participation and well-being,” said Sheryl Hay with Enderby & District Recreation Services. “These improvements represent a significant step toward creating a barrier-free community where we can all access facilities and programs. A healthy community is a community that includes everyone.”

The RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program was created to support accessibility improvements in communities across Canada and to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Rick Hansen's Man In Motion World Tour.

The program funds projects that remove physical barriers and advance inclusion in public spaces.

More than 64% of Canadians either have a disability or live with or care for someone who does, highlighting the growing importance of accessible infrastructure in communities of all sizes.

The City of Enderby was one of only seven British Columbia recipients and one of 40 organizations, municipalities, schools, and community groups selected nationwide through a highly competitive application process.

There will be a community event celebrating the completion of these projects in November 2026.

The John Pritchard Memorial Sports Complex is about to get a whole lot louder.

Enderby is proud to announce that it will serve as the home ice for the Enderby Icemen, a new franchise in the Western International Junior Hockey League (WIJHL). This partnership marks a major victory for local sports, driving elite athlete development and promising a high-octane experience for a community known to have some of the best fans in the game.

“Enderby is a hockey town, plain and simple,” said Mayor Huck Galbraith. “Hosting the Enderby Icemen at our arena is a win for our entire sports culture. I know our community will show up loud and proud. I cannot wait to hear the arena rocking when our team takes the ice. It is going to be electric!”

The arrival of the Enderby Icemen adds a thrilling new chapter to the storied hockey culture shared by the City and Rural Enderby (Area F), further establishing the John Pritchard Memorial Sports Complex as a vital hub for local athletes and fans alike.

Enderby & District Services Commission Chair and RDNO Area F Director Allysa Hopkins noted that the team will be a centrepiece for community spirit. “This adds another layer of excitement to our facility,” Hopkins said. “We have a fantastic venue and the best people to fill the stands and root for our team. I am thrilled to see the energy that Junior hockey will bring to our winter season. Let’s go, Icemen!”

As the Enderby Icemen prepare for their debut season, fans should watch for upcoming announcements regarding the full WIJHL schedule, tickets, merchandise, and a home-opener celebration. It’s time to start making ice - Enderby has a home team once again, and the season cannot start soon enough.

Have your art make an impact in your community!

Would you like to see your artwork featured on the front desks of businesses and on the refrigerators of locals?

The City of Enderby is looking for interested artists to submit two seasonal designs for Mayor and Council’s Community Recognition Cards. This artwork will be featured on the front of 5"x7" cards and used to welcome new businesses and recognize citizens for their community service.

The submissions should include appropriate content that reflects and compliments the character of Enderby, BC and the natural beauty of the surroundings. The submissions should be no larger than 8"x10" and no smaller than 5"x7".

The City is seeking two seasonal designs: one featuring Spring/Summer themes and another capturing the beauty of Winter in Enderby.

Preference will be given to local artists. A single artist may make more than one submission to each seasonal category. Each winning submission will receive a one-time payment of $200 for purchase of their design(s). If one artist has two winning submissions, they will be paid $200 per design.

The winning submissions will be for the exclusive use of the City for an unlimited term. The City may use the artwork for other purposes related to its functions and communications.

Closing Date:

Submissions will be accepted until 2 p.m. PST on Friday, January 16, 2026.

All submissions must include the following:
i. Artist Release Form; and
ii. Artwork that is no larger than 8"x10" and no smaller than 5"x7".

The public survey will be open from December 16, 2024, to January 31, 2025.  

You can drop off completed paper surveys at City Hall or send a photo of your answers by email to accessibility@rdno.ca. Those who require an alternate method to participate in this survey other than the ones identified above are encouraged to contact the Regional District of North Okanagan at accessibility@rdno.ca or 250-550-3700.

Join us this year for a pancake breakfast, parade, and then over to Barnes Park to celebrate our nation!

With a classic car show, yummy b-day cake, free swim, dunk tank, activities and games, a live music, fireworks, pancake breakfast, and so much more - there is plenty to keep the whole family in a festive spirit!

Financial Support for Radon Mitigation

If your report indicates that mitigation is needed and cost is a concern, the Canadian Lung Association offers a radon mitigation grant of up to $1500. This grant is available to homeowners who meet the eligibility criteria.

Radon and Radon Test Kit Background Information

The Radon Test Kits collect background radon levels inside of households over a four-month period and are then returned so that levels can be analysed.

After the detectors are analyzed, each participant will privately receive a report with their own results. A summary of the community data without specific participant details will be made available to help inform others.

The kits provide valuable information to local residents about radon levels in their households so that they can make informed decisions on next steps to protect themselves and their families.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and can be found in elevated concentrations in homes across the country, including the North Okanagan.  Take Action on Radon is a national initiative funded by Health Canada that is led by the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists and the Canadian Cancer Society.
