With the new outdoor pool under construction and changing the layout of Barnes Park, our community has an exciting opportunity to shape the future of the park.

The Enderby & District Services Commission is seeking your input on these big picture questions, to help plan the design of Barnes Park over the next five, 10 and even 20 years:

• Do we need replaced, different, or enhanced amenities to meet current and future needs at Barnes Park?
• What should we do with the space where the existing Lions Outdoor Pool is located, once it is decommissioned?

Your feedback will be considered by elected officials alongside park design best practices, financial feasibility, and existing policies, as we move to the next step of developing a concept plan to guide the future development of Barnes Park.

Paper copies of the survey are also available at City Hall, the Visitor Centre and the Enderby Library.

Please submit paper copies to Enderby City Hall by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Council for City of Enderby has declared July 20th-26th, 2025 as National Drowning Prevention Week in Enderby.

National Drowning Prevention Week is a public education initiative by the Lifesaving Society with events taking place across the country to focus attention on drowning prevention. This year's theme is Safer Together!

Every day of National Drowning Prevention Week, a variety of lifesaving activities will be hosted by Enderby & District Recreation Services.

The City of Enderby is seeking a motivated and reliable person to join its Parks team.  The successful candidate will join a small team of skilled and dedicated individuals who take great pride in maintaining parks and recreation facilities in the City of Enderby.  This is a new position driven by department growth.

From ball diamonds to an ice arena to a pool to several mid-sized parks, this position is best suited to a person with a strong attention to detail, excellent customer service and communication skills, the ability to learn new things and implement procedures with quality and consistency under limited supervision, and the ability to work a flexible shift schedule with a concentration on evenings and weekends.  The position offers a 30-hour work week with the potential for additional hours based on user group and facility needs.

Requirements and Preferred Skills/Experience

• Work in a professional and safe manner at all times.
• Strong customer service and teamwork values.
• Perform physical labour, including lifting, shovelling, and climbing, occasionally in confined spaces and at heights.
• Working knowledge of standard office and communication software applications.
• Excellent problem-solving and multi-tasking abilities, including an attention to detail while applying practical and technical skills in the field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to learn new things, including operating a public pool and an ice refrigeration plant in accordance with technical and safety regulations and requirements.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends.
• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• A Class 5 BC Driver’s License and ability to obtain and maintain a clean driving record.
• Must provide and maintain an acceptable Police Information Check.
• WHMIS and Basic First Aid.
• Pool Operator 1 certification is preferred (must be obtained within 6 months of start date).
• Ice Facility Operator certification is preferred.  The successful candidate must obtain their Refrigeration Operator certification prior to September 1, 2026.

Enderby & District Sports Complex Renamed in Honour of Local Community Builder, John Pritchard

Enderby, BC – The Enderby & District Sports Complex, which contains a skating/hockey arena and a curling rink, is the fortunate recipient of a $250,000 donation from The Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation.  In honour of this donation, the facility will be renamed the John Pritchard Memorial Sports Complex.  An additional $10,000 will be donated by the foundation to youth hockey equipment.

After shutting down suddenly in January 2024 due to a failing refrigeration system, the cost of the ice facility’s repairs quickly added up for the small community of Enderby.  However, the facility’s value was widely recognized, with the impact of its loss felt profoundly.  The donation by The Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation will assist the aging facility as it continues serving ice enthusiasts locally and regionally.

“We are very thankful to The Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation for their generous donation to our ice facility,” said Enderby & District Services Commission Chair and Enderby City Councillor, Shawn Shishido.  “When the facility’s refrigeration plant failed in early 2024 and we had to shut down, the impact reverberated throughout the community and the region.  The attachment that people have to our ice facility runs deep, with memories that span generations.”

Allysa Hopkins, Electoral Area F (Rural Enderby) Director of the Regional District of North Okanagan, shared Councillor Shishido’s appreciation.  “The support that we saw streaming in from across Canada when we were in the running to win the Hockeyville competition was a tremendous reminder of the importance of our ice facility.  Though we did not win the competition, we won so much by bringing our community together.  When The Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation contacted us to offer a significant donation that would match the Hockeyville grand prize, it was a dream come true,” she said.

The Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation was established in 2007 and supports a broad cross-section of causes, including health and education, arts and culture, and emergency services.  “I am very excited to support the ice facility in Enderby, in a way that remembers my Uncle John’s service to the community,” says Colin Pritchard.  “I have very fond memories as a young boy visiting my Uncle John in Enderby.  When I heard the news that Enderby’s ice facility had shut down in January, and recalling my Uncle John’s dedication to his community, I wanted to offer my help in a way that memorializes his legacy.”

John Pritchard was a community builder who made significant contributions to Enderby’s recreation and health facilities, public safety and emergency response, and bussing students to and from school.  From saving two individuals from drowning in the Shuswap River to operating a fleet of school buses without a single preventable accident over one million miles, to helping build the original outdoor public pool as part of the Enderby Lions, to chairing the Enderby Hospital Board for ten consecutive terms, to serving as Chief or Deputy Chief of the Enderby Fire Department, John Pritchard’s contributions were innumerable.

Enderby Mayor Huck Galbraith acknowledged the significance of a new name that is drawn from Enderby’s history.  “Colin and Lois Pritchard, with their generous donation through their foundation, are truly a godsend for the entire community and surrounding areas. The Pritchard family name is a deep-rooted, honourable name in our community.  It is our privilege to be able to name our ice facility in memory of Colin’s uncle.”

On Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 2:00pm, there will be a special renaming ceremony at the John Pritchard Memorial Sports Complex at 1605 Kate Street in Enderby, during a North Okanagan Minor Hockey Association tournament.  During the ceremony, a plaque honouring the facility’s new namesake will be placed by Colin Pritchard along with several family members.  The public is welcome to attend.

The Enderby & District Services Commission, composed of members of Enderby City Council and the Electoral Area F Director and Alternate Director, recently received an update on design development and the construction schedule for the new outdoor pool.

Construction is set to begin in January of 2025, with the facility scheduled to open for the start of the pool season - Tuesday, May 19, 2026!

As the design process has evolved, a number of improvements to the original design have been made that we are excited to share with you. The biggest improvements include:

• Increased programmable shallow water space and a right-sized lazy river.
• Improved accessibility features.
• Better use of available deck space, including additional shade space and leisure seating.
• Lifeguarding improvements.
• Enhanced change area and washrooms.

The City of Enderby is reporting that the investigation into the mechanical problems that led to the early shut down of the Enderby & District Sports Complex has concluded.  The repair of the Complex, which includes the Enderby Arena and the Curling Rink, is now proceeding.  It is anticipated that the Complex will be operational for the start of the ice season, in September 2024.

The following work has occurred or is in progress:

1. The refrigeration chiller has been drained, inspected, and confirmed to be in good working order, such that it can be returned to service.  The chiller, which is an expensive and critical system component, did not sustain damage prior to the facility shutting down.
2. The corroded steel brine header on the Arena side of the Complex has been removed and disposed.  A brine header made of material found in newer arenas, which is resistant to corrosion, will be installed this summer.
3. The contaminated brine has been flushed from the refrigeration system and will be replenished with clean brine.
4. The suspected brine leak in the floor has been discovered, which will be repaired.  Pressure testing has confirmed the existence of a single leak, which will reduce the total repair costs.

Councillor Shawn Shishido, Chair of the Enderby & District Services Commission, said, “I would like to thank our community for the tremendous support that they showed to the Enderby & District Sports Complex.

"Despite the unfortunate circumstances, how our community came together was inspirational," he continued.  "The support that we saw regionally, provincially, and across Canada was absolutely phenomenal, and I would like to thank each and every person for the role that they played in getting us to this point.  We could not have done it without you!”
