On November 11, 2021, we stand together to remember and respect the bravery and sacrifice of those who served our country. They gave with distinction and honour, at great personal cost, to protect our highest values.

On behalf of the City of Enderby, I offer my deepest respect to those who have given selflessly, so that we may live in freedom. They saw, felt, and experienced the tragedies of war and the suffering of humanity in a way that we could never imagine, without actually being there alongside them.

Remembrance Day is a solemn day in which we not only remember their courage and their loss, but also remind ourselves never to forget the terrible consequences of war. There is an irreplaceable emptiness where those who served once stood. But there is also the continued presence of those values that we must cherish and hold dear, for they came at the greatest of consequence.

At 11am on November 11, 2021, please take two minutes of silence to recognize those who sacrificed so that we may live in freedom. May those two minutes be an opportunity to remind yourself, always, “Lest we forget.”

Mayor McCune provides the following message commemorating Canada Day 2021 in Enderby:

Canada Day is a celebration of who we are as a nation and those national values with which we identify.

As we recover from the pandemic, there is an opportunity to renew our ties with friends and family, and an ability to return to many of the activities that we love.

This year, due to public health restrictions, we had planned a scaled-back Canada Day celebration consisting of fireworks and a special day at the pool. The pool will be open and our spray park will be on to help people of all ages cool off. During the heat wave, please remember to check on friends, family, and neighbours who may be vulnerable to the heat, to make sure that they are okay.

However, our fireworks show will be postponed due to the heat wave. When the City puts on a fireworks show in dry conditions, we take extra measures to manage the risk. However, a prolonged heat wave adds a different kind of challenge that affects how emergency personnel respond, if they are called out for a fire. After careful consideration, postponing the fireworks show was seen as the safest choice. There will be a show at a later date.

This has been a year when we have struggled to reconcile Canadian values with the tragedies that are being investigated at residential schools across the country. My deepest sympathy goes out to the victims and survivors of the residential school system, and the intergenerational trauma that continues. On this Canada Day, I urge our community to think about what reconciliation means in the context of what Canada must become. We all have a part to play. Start by hearing the stories. Then, enter into a dialogue. On the basis of that dialogue, take action.

As we celebrate Canada, let it be in the context of what we can do, individually and as a group, to ensure that our actions always align with our values. Let it be with a renewed commitment to respect, honesty, dignity, inclusion, and truth.

On Canada Day in 2021, let it be a day when we come together with friends and family to reflect upon our nation, our values, and our actions.

The City of Enderby is lowering its City Hall flag to half-mast in honour of the 215 children discovered at a former residential school site in Kamloops.

City of Enderby Mayor Greg McCune offers the following words to mark this sad occasion:

I offer my condolences to the families who had loved ones taken from them, never to be returned.

When we fly a flag at half-mast, we do so to mourn and remember. But that is not enough. We must also act, by joining our voices together to demand first truth, and then accountability.

This is a shameful chapter of our past, but we must be careful not to consign it too quickly to history; its sad legacy is very much part of our present and its trauma has scarred generations. We must do better at hearing the stories and confronting the truth if we are to make of justice something more than mere aspiration.

I will be asking our Member of Parliament and Member of the Legislative Assembly to implement meaningful actions, including creating a national day of mourning and fully investigating the former sites of residential schools across Canada, under the guidance of indigenous leaders, keepers of knowledge, and residential school survivors.

The shock and horror that we feel over the missing children demands that we shine a light on the cruelty of the residential school system and take action. We cannot speak of justice until we first talk of the truth.

On Remembrance Day, November 11, 2020, we will come together in a much different way to honour the brave persons in uniform who served our country and upheld our freedoms throughout history.

On this day, we pay our solemn respect and offer our admiration to those who served and sacrificed to enable us – and so many others, the world over – to live in freedom. Their courage as they confronted the tragedies of war and human suffering must be kept in our hearts and minds, always.

Unlike prior years, a gathering to honour those who served will not occur in Enderby due to a tragedy of another kind. In the throes of a global pandemic, we are fighting a different fight this year; however, we remain steadfast in our commitment to remember those who fought for the values that we cherish.

There will be a Field of Remembrance display in Cenotaph Park by the Enderby Legion, with contributions from local students and the Dutch Liberation, to honour our veterans and service members. Memorial banners featuring local veterans will be posted along Mill Avenue and nearby streets. Mill Avenue, which is adjacent to Cenotaph Park and the Enderby Legion, has the honourary street designation of “Veterans Way” as an ongoing tribute to those who served and sacrificed, as well as their families.

Let us also pay our respects on November 8, 2020, which is National Aboriginal Veterans Day. On this day, we recognize the contributions of indigenous peoples to the freedoms and values that we hold in our hearts.

At 11am on November 11, 2020, wherever you may be, I urge you to observe two minutes of silence to recognize those who fought for us.

When you glance down at the poppy on your shirt or jacket, let it be an opportunity to say, “Lest we forget.”

I want to thank our community for their
tremendous efforts to support others and remain calm during a time of
crisis. Community members are feeling
the impact of the coronavirus in different ways – from isolation and anxiety to
health and economic loss. Our hearts and
minds are with those who are affected by the outbreak. We are living in challenging times, but we
will beat this by thinking of others, staying well-informed, and acting in
socially responsible ways.

While the provincial health authority has a
leadership role on the pandemic response, the City of Enderby has a vital role
in providing emergency and essential services to our community. I want to assure our community that we have
contingency plans in place to ensure continuity. I thank our emergency responders, our staff
at the City, and my colleagues on Council for their commitment and leadership
during a time of crisis. To the best extent
that we can, we are also continuing with the normal business of local
government in prioritized and socially responsible ways.

Our businesses and their employees also
deserve tremendous praise for operating in socially responsible ways. Please use their services with courtesy and
respect. We need to think of them as our
economy slows. Employees in the retail
and service industries are on the front lines.
Behind them, suppliers and manufacturers are working hard to adjust
their operations due to the demands placed on supply chains.

Individually, there are many things that we
can do to help, and to help others. It
can be something as simple as making sure that your friends and neighbours know
that you are only a telephone call away.
Practicing social distancing and reducing your exposure to crowded
places will help to slow the transmission of the coronavirus while protecting
yourself. Enhancing your personal
hygiene and sanitizing the places where you work or live is critical to
fighting the coronavirus. Relying upon
authoritative sources of information, like the BC Centre for Disease Control,
and not participating in the spread of rumours, ensures that our community
responds in ways that are appropriate to the actual situation.

A pandemic demands an emergency response quite
unlike anything experienced in recent history.
Like nothing else, it requires an “all of society” approach where we
must act with caution, respect, and responsibility. Every day, I see and hear inspiring examples
of community members rising to the occasion.
When faced with challenge, the one thing that I always have faith in is
Enderby’s ability to respond as a community.

That thanks starts with the recognition of all our amazing, dedicated volunteers who give much of their time to make our community all that it is. Those who work tirelessly with the school’s hot lunch programs, Feed Enderby and District Food Bank, Santa’s Workshop, Harvest Hut, reading with elementary students, the school’s Parent Advisory Committees, Enderby and District Arts Council, Enderby and District Lions Club, Enderby and District Volunteer Fire Department and the many, many others deserve much gratitude for their tireless efforts. It is evident that ours is a community that takes care of and looks out for one another.

Enderby council would also like to express our warmest holiday wishes to all. We value the support and vision this community shares, and we look forward to another year of successful initiatives.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Enderby Mayor Greg McCune

They did this to learn more about local businesses through face-to-face interviews and to identify opportunities for further supporting community economic development. The British Columbia Economic Development Association has identified Business Walks as a key way to support business retention and expansion.

"We wanted to meet with local businesses in order to understand the issues and barriers that they may be facing. It was great to have Community Futures, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Ministry of Jobs take part as it allowed us to directly connect our local businesses with a variety of available resources, services, and information," said Mayor Greg McCune.

A survey was conducted with each business. This allowed the City of Enderby to collect key information about community economic trends, opportunities, and threats. This information will be shared with the Province of British Columbia to help develop business support programs.

"Business retention and expansion is a high priority for our community, so it's really important that we bring together community partners such as Community Futures, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Ministry of Jobs to identify what we can do to help our local businesses thrive," explained Mayor Greg McCune.

A summary report of business feedback will be presented to Council at a later date along with a list of proposed action items for implementation.

What is a business walk?

[su_quote cite="BC Economic Development Association" url="http://bceda.ca"]

Business Walks involves a partnership facilitated by the economic development group within the local area.

"Walkers" (teams of leaders made up from the partners) walk from business to business asking a few conversationally structured questions that capture the pulse of the business community. Over a few short hours large portions of the community are covered.

The Business Walk program offers an excellent opportunity to listen to the local business community, identifying common themes for action while bringing together educational resources, municipal services and representatives of the business community for specific action plans. The Business Walks program allows visitation to numerous businesses in a short amount of time in order to gather industry intelligence to foster business growth.

Mayor, Council, and community groups including the Enderby Lions gave the team a victory celebration to remember. A fire truck parade, photos at City Hall with Enderby and Splatsin Councils, and a meal at the Lions Gazebo in Riverside Park. And did we mention cake?

[su_quote cite="Greg McCune
Mayor of the Best baseball City in the Province"]
Tonight (July 9, 2015), the City of Enderby celebrated the spectacular accomplishment of our U-14 Girls as British Columbia Provincial Fastball Champions.

This group of incredible young ladies, along with their coaches Rose Agricola, Joey Sherman, and Dave Belway, and many family and friend supporters, won the Championship last weekend in Coquitlam.

From the opening pitch of this season this group believed and worked extremely hard toward this goal. Hats off to everyone that is a part of Enderby Minor Fastball. Also we would like to congratulate Brooklyn Hay from the U-19 Storm who was picked up by West Kelowna for the Provincials. Brooklyn came home with a Bronze Medal. Thank you all for a fantastic season and look forward lots of Storm victories in the Spring of 2016!
[/su_quote]

Your City Councillors and staff have been working hard on their portfolios and will be ready to present this year’s priorities for the March 1st deadline that we have set. This will coincide with the budget process that is underway and will continue to match projects with the funds that are available.

The Mayor and the Councillors that you elected in November of 2014 are all committed to working on your behalf to move the City of Enderby into the future. We see a community that will allow everyone to chase their dreams and live in a place that is affordable and provide the services that you tell us you need.

We look forward to the challenges and know that with open communication with citizens and community groups from our amazing volunteers to the business community, the schools, the recreation services, seniors programs and always improving healthcare system we can have a community that we will continue to be very proud of. This will lead to others moving to our city and will help us to create more jobs and opportunities.

It is a complete honour to be the Mayor of such an amazing City. We live in a very beautiful part of the world and the strength of our region will continue to make this a very desirable place to Live Visit and Play. Tell your friends and your family. Enderby is the place to be. A great place to raise a family or retire with the services you need.

Please feel free to contact myself or any of the councillors with your thoughts or ideas. Thank You

Greg McCune
Mayor, City of Enderby

The acquisition of the CP Rail corridor which runs through Enderby, development of Barnes Park and continuing to upgrade portions of our infrastructure are only a few. As I had mentioned, the wants and needs list for our community is forever changing and the role of Mayor and Council is to continue to address each of them.

It’s great to see we have received the consultant's rendering of what Barnes Park can look like [which will be presented at a future public meeting of the Enderby & District Services Commission], with all of the features we have discussed, and I remain very excited to see this project move forward!

In closing, it has been a privilege to serve this community in municipal government for the past nine years, especially the last three as your Mayor. I wish you all the best in the future.

Well, now that the rush of the summer is over and our thoughts turn to cleaning up our gardens and putting away the summer clothes, I thought it timely to send you an update on activities around the City. Although our meetings were halved during July and August, we nonetheless were busy carrying on the business of the City.

Now that we have had the digital sign installed and a policy adopted which will guide its use, it’s time to put it to work. I really do believe this sign will be very beneficial to our community as we advertise community activities for all to see. This sign has various functions, such as colour and graphics, and think it will prove a very good investment.

Unfortunately for us, that wonderful mule deer statue has been sold and moved to its new location. I am very pleased that its creator has found a sale for it, while at the same time hopeful he will introduce another of his marvelous creations for display.

Work on Mill Ave. continues and, once completed, it will be another excellent addition to our ever-improving infrastructure. These are the types of projects we need to continue each and every year, if we are going to combat the infrastructure deficit that communities across the land are experiencing. We are told, however, that our community is well ahead of most others in dealing with this issue.

Most of Council and I are off to the UBCM convention this month and we will have a chance to be informed of a vast array of issues which member municipalities are concerned with, how they are dealing with them, and how the government is assisting. I always find many of the problems they are having are similar to ours, so it’s an excellent learning experience.

At UBCM, we will be meeting with the Minister of Health, where we will express our concern about the physician shortage and press for assistance in getting Phase 2 funded at Enderby Memorial Terrace. On that note, we have been very successful in acquiring another physician as the result of communication with both the Ministry and Interior Health. Dr. Rebecca Anwar has opened her practise at the Enderby Health Centre and is accepting patients. She will be residing in Enderby and I will be meeting with her soon in order to welcome her to our community. This is wonderful news, but we will continue to try and enhance the level of health care for our community.

Also at UBCM, we will be meeting with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to achieve an understanding of what the government's plan is for the arterial highway in future years, including how they see the CP Rail corridor playing a role, if at all. All in all, we shall be busy.

I guess that’s about it for now, but I welcome the opportunity to try and keep you abreast of our activities. In closing, I hope you all have a wonderful Fall season, as you watch those leaves turn their brilliant colours.

Best Regards,

Howie

June brought another opportunity to attend the A.L. Fortune Grad and address the Class of 2014. It’s always a pleasure to share with them and their families the joy of their success.

The mule deer has arrived and while not everyone may embrace the idea of displaying it, it really is a wonderful work of art and it garners a ton of attention. It’s that attention we hope will cause people to stop, take a few photos, and perhaps walk around our little City!

I have heard a number of comments about the vacant rail property, some voicing hope that it would be a hiking/biking trail, others worried about potential chaos from motorized ATV’s and motorcycles on it. I simply want to assure everyone that we are working hard to ensure our community derives the best possible outcomes from the land. We will be keeping you all informed, as things progress.

I really have wanted to acquire outdoor fitness equipment for an outdoor park at Barnes Park. This is coming closer to a reality, as it appears we will be able to access some grant funding to purchase and install equipment at a strategic location in the Park. This will allow citizens of all ages to spend some time, improving or maintaining their fitness.

Lastly, the date is coming ever closer to when our community will welcome SOAR 2014! We have worked very hard to be chosen as the site, and commencing July 15 staff will be arriving to set up shop. Some 2,000 Guides from BC and the rest of Canada, the US, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Japan and Grenada will gather for their Spirit of Adventure Rendezvous and you will see them throughout our community for several days. I know you will all provide a hearty welcome, as only our citizens can do.

Well, I guess that’s about it for now, more to come next month. In the meantime, have a safe and fun-filled summer!

Folks, time has simply flown by and other than individual conversations Council and I have had with residents, or newspaper articles, there has been very little communication about where our City is and the plans we have for moving it forward, for many years to come: Although our Staff utilizes the Our Enderby page on Facebook, it occurs to me that many of you might not routinely access this function. We have, with the help of many of you, embarked upon an aggressive planning process which will result in a plan for future growth. The plan will help us create a sustainable community, economically, socially and environmentally. You can well imagine the extent of this process, because we have essentially looked at every segment of our community. We want to be positioned to be sustainable for decades to come, so our scrutiny has been very broad.

This process also has been about examining how we as a community do business, how we can attract new business, and how we can do a better job of supporting those who already are here. This is by no means an easy task, but we have all been up for the task. In addition to the work we have done on this major project, funded by a Gas Tax grant, we have worked very hard to try and stay ahead of the curve when addressing infrastructure needs. Council and I have been supported by an outstanding crew at City Hall, and through careful management of our fiscal resources, successfully applying for grants and ensuring we kept our reserves in a healthy state, we have managed to accomplish some very significant things. The most recent one has been securing some $700,000 in grant monies to assist in our Flood Protection efforts, something that will assist us in preventing flooding that has occurred in the downtown area and affected businesses and residences alike. Had we not placed funds in reserves, to fulfill our contribution, this grant would not have occurred.

We have much to look forward to in our City, as the economy continues to improve. In the near future you will see and hear of the results of our efforts to stimulate our community. We can be proud of the fact we have an excellent working relationship with all of our neighbours and collectively we recognize the importance of those relationships, in everything we do. I will try to keep in touch with you all on a more frequent basis, but in the meantime please let us know if you have an idea which you feel will enhance the great things we can celebrate locally.

Best Regards

Howie

Many good things have been accomplished in our little city, testament to the harmony that exists within. We have an excellent City team and an abundance of - something we can be very proud of. Despite the many successes we have enjoyed, there is still work to be done in 2014 and beyond because a healthy sustainable community just doesn't happen overnight.

But for now, as we approach Christmas, we think of our family, friends and neighbours, wishing for them peace, health and happiness for now and always. Therefore, as your Mayor, from our house to yours, we wish you all the very best Christmas has to offer. Once again in 2014, we will collectively roll up our sleeves and get to work.
