Did you know that the City of Enderby is located in a wildlife interface area? In these areas, wildlife is at risk of being habituated to unnatural food sources such as residential garbage and fruit from fruit trees, which often leads to the wildlife losing their fear of humans and becoming dangerous, at which point they must be euthanized.

To help prevent this, the City of Enderby has adopted Wildlife Attractant Bylaw No. 1754, 2022 which requires property owners to properly manage wildlife attractants on their properties. Pursuant to the City’s Wildlife Attractant Bylaw, here are 10 things you can do to help us to co-exist and prevent conflict with wildlife who inhabit the area:

Store your garbage indoors or otherwise in durable, rigid receptacles that are fitted with covers that are inaccessible to wildlife.

Do not place your garbage at curbside earlier than 4:00 am on the day of collection.

Do not feed or attempt to feed wildlife such as deer or bear.

Keep the exterior of your property clear of any food products or food containers, and ensure your compost is kept and maintained in an enclosed and secure rigid container that is inaccessible to wildlife.

Ensure that any refrigerators or freezers that are stored outdoors are inaccessible to wildlife.

If your pet food is stored outdoors, ensure it is kept in a secure, wildlife-resistant container.

Clean barbecue after use – don’t forget the grease trap!

Remove any fruit from your fruit trees that has fallen to the ground.

Keep birdfeeders suspended in a manner that is inaccessible to wildlife, and keep the ground under birdfeeders clear of seeds.

Ensure your domestic animals, backyard hens and backyard bees are reasonably inaccessible to wildlife.

The Our Enderby Clean-Up Challenge is back with a self-guided format this year, which will enable residents to clean-up and beautify areas throughout the community while maintaining social distancing.

The Clean-Up Challenge will take place on Saturday May 29, 2021 and instead of having a muster point and official start time, residents can simply visit the City Hall parking lot any time between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm to grab gloves, garbage bags and bottled water that will be made available at a pick-up station. Once participants are finished, they may dispose of the collected garbage in a dumpster located in the City Hall parking lot.

"We weren’t able to complete the Our Enderby Clean-Up Challenge last year due to the pandemic, so we felt it was important to bring the Clean-Up back this year with a different format that would allow residents to get out there and help in a pandemic-safe manner," explains Mayor Greg McCune.

The City of Enderby asks all participants to follow public health orders and guidelines – please come in small groups (less than 10 people with whom you visit regularly outdoors), maintain 2 m physical distancing, bring your own hand sanitizer, and wear your layers of protection when appropriate.

The City of Enderby is challenging YOU to take part in this year’s self-guided Our Enderby Clean-Up Challenge. For any questions or inquiries, please contact the City of Enderby at (250) 838-7230.

The
City of Enderby, in conjunction with its garbage collection contractor, Tip-It
Waste Solutions, is making changes to improve its garbage collection service
that will improve efficiency and remove animal attractants from curbside that
much faster.

Curbside garbage collection will still occur every Tuesday beginning at 7:00am. However, beginning with the first collection day in April 2020, Tip-It Waste Solutions will be adding a second truck and crew. This means that curbside collection will be completed in half of a day, rather than a full day, which increases efficiency on the route.

This
change may only be noticed by residents who are in the habit of placing their
garbage at curbside later in the day.
All residents should be placing their garbage at curbside by 7:00am to
assure collection.

Both
trucks will be starting at 7:00am, with one collecting on the east side of
George Street (Highway 97A) and the other on the west side. It is anticipated that both trucks will
complete their routes by 12pm. Prior to
this change, properties to the east of George Street were collected in the
afternoon.

This
change also helps to reduce the amount of time that garbage is left out at the
curb, which will reduce animal attractants.

“Enderby
is located in a wildlife interface area, between the Shuswap River to the east
and a mountainous area to the west. We
have a lot of wildlife moving through developed areas in order to reach natural
sources of food. Along the way, they may
be attracted to garbage and other sources of food which are easier to
obtain. This has tragic consequences
that we can help prevent by being more ‘bear aware,’” explains Enderby Mayor
Greg McCune.

“When we reduce the ready availability of animal attractants, it keeps bears and other animals from getting habituated to humans and domestic animals. When we can combine that with some added efficiency in delivering a City service, it is a win for everybody.”

If you have any questions or concerns about this upcoming change, please contact Colton Douglas of Tip-It Waste Solutions at 250-546-2005 extension 3 or by email at colton.tipit@gmail.com.

This program is intended to deal with pruning that typically occurs from one spring to the next. It is not intended to address large volumes of pruning associated with landscaping or properties that have not been tended for a number of years.

If you have a large volume of prunings, you can drop it off year-round for free at one of RDNO’s Recycling and Disposal Facilities.
